People are asked to dial ‘*401#’ which is the call forwarding number. Many people know about it and many more need to know about it. Due to this, the Department of Telecommunications has warned millions of mobile phone users in India. It is advised to be wary of calls suggesting to dial ‘*401#’ with an unknown number.

In particular, the Department of Telecommunications warned users of Airtel, Jio, Vodafone-Idea and BSNL that the number of ‘*401#’ call forwarding scams increased in October. Scammers contact people claiming to be delivery agents, bank representatives or service providers to further scam.

To know working style of cybercriminals, they often act as bank agents or telecom support representatives. It says there is a network problem or some other problem. In that case, it says to dial ‘*401#’ to solve the problem. If you follow what they say, the money in your bank account will disappear.

By doing this all calls to your number will go to scammer number. This means that this move will allow fraudsters to receive all incoming calls, which they will further use to commit fraud in all forms, mentioned in its statement. People are hereby advised to ignore such service calls.

How to Prevent Call Forwarding: Due to such scams users have unknowingly enabled call forwarding but it is very important to disable it quickly. For this the user has to go to the settings of the phone. Then navigate to call settings there. Then disable call forwarding option or restore default settings.
