Direct to Mobile: Watch Live TV on mobile without SIM card and internet

The central government has said that the Direct to Mobile (D2M) scheme will soon be implemented on a pilot basis in 19 cities of the country, including Bangalore.

DTH (Direct to Home) technology has changed the way of watching TV by placing an antenna on the house. Now the world’s first Direct to Mobile (D2M) technology has come to compete with DTH technology.

The central government has said that the D2M scheme will soon be implemented on a pilot basis in 19 cities of the country, including Bangalore. The feature of this technology, developed entirely indigenously, is that users can watch any program including live TV channels on their mobiles without a SIM card or internet connection.

Apart from revolutionizing the digital age, D2M is now the focus of attention as this technology is highly effective in times of national security threats and national disasters.

What is Technology?:

Earlier television programs were transmitted by regional broadcasting stations in different parts of the country through different spectrums to every corner of the country. Antennas on the customer’s home would receive these signals and broadcast them to the TV.

In the D2H technology that came later, the dish antennas placed on the house received the messages transmitted by the satellites and allowed TV viewing. In addition, customers could also watch TV on mobile phones using the signals transmitted by the telecom companies through their towers.

But for this both SIM and internet were mandatory in the mobile. But D2M is a mix of both broadcast and broadband technologies. Here any program will be transmitted by television regional broadcasting stations using exclusive spectrum. Mobile customers with the technology to receive it can watch the show on their mobiles without a SIM card or internet.

‘IIT Kanpur’ and ‘Samkhya Lab’ have developed this D2M technology indigenously which is said to be the first in the world. It was piloted in selected cities including Bangalore last year. As part of its progress, it has now been decided to put it into practical use in 19 cities including Bengaluru, Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Apoorva Chandra informed at a program.

What is the benefit?:

The reason why the current internet is constantly giving up is because of the huge amount of quality videos that are broadcast there. Thus, if such videos or programs are transmitted through D2M, the management burden on mobile networks will be reduced. Out of 28 crore households in the country, only 19 crore households have a TV set.

This means that at least 8-9 crore households are deprived of the program aired on TV. On the other hand, there are currently 80 crore smartphone users in the country. 69% of its users watch videos. Thus, through D2M technology, program viewing can be done from home to home.

This service is quite cheap as no sim card or internet is required. There is no danger of the Internet giving away. If our satellites fail during a national calamity such as a war, or if the internet fails, during a calamity such as an earthquake or tsunami, any information can be transmitted to millions of people in the country in an instant through this technology.
