IMD issued Heavy Rainfall alert in Maharashtra till June 22

The India Meteorological Department (IMD), the westerly winds blowing in along the west coast and a trough from North Interior Karnataka to south Tamil Nadu will collectively cause heavy rains across Maharashtra and its neighbouring states for the next five days until June 22 and possibly beyond. IMD issued Heavy Rainfall alert in Maharashtra till June 22.

Accordingly, IMD issued Heavy Rainfall isolated heavy showers have been forecast over South Konkan and Goa from Saturday to Wednesday (June 18-22) and over the ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra from Monday to Wednesday (June 20-22). Furthermore, strong southerly and southwesterly winds from the Bay of Bengal and a north-south trough from northeast Bihar to interior Odisha are also expected to combine and dump isolated heavy rainfall over Maharashtra’s Vidarbha subdivision this weekend (June 18-19).

June 21: Isolated heavy to very heavy showers over Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg; Isolated heavy rains over Pune, Kolhapur and Satara

June 21: IMD issued Heavy Rainfall alert Isolated heavy to very heavy showers over Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Kolhapur and Satara; Isolated heavy rains over Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and Pune

Owing to these wet conditions, the daytime temperatures across the state are likely to be close to or below normal in this forecast period. Since the beginning of the monsoon period on June 1.

The inactive phase of monsoon has led to Maharashtra recording just 40.3 rainfall so far this month a 57% ‘deficit’ compared to its long-term average for the period between June 1 and 18, which stands at 93.4 mm. But with the rains set to pick up the pace from this weekend onwards, the state wide precipitation figures are likely to edge closer to normal as we approach the end of the month.
