Indian Railways has announced a significant reduction in passenger train fares ahead of Lok Sabha Election 2024. The ticket price will be reduced by 40 to 50 percent, which has brought great relief to the passengers. New adjustments have been made after passenger train tickets became available in the Unreserved Ticket System (UTS).

Earlier, the lowest fare for passenger and express trains was Rs. 30. But, after this adjustment, which is now only applicable to passenger trains, the fare will be Rs. 10, and tickets are now available on the UTS app. After the Covid lockdown, passenger and MEMU trains were converted into express trains, resulting in fare hike.

However, with this decision, the fares of short distance trains are expected to revert to the previous rates, which will provide relief to passengers. Northern Railway has recently implemented similar fare changes along with broad adjustments made by Indian Railways to facilitate passengers across the country.

The objective is to reduce the financial burden on daily commuters. Under this, train ticket fares are reduced by around 40-50 percent. Earlier passengers had to pay express train fare to travel in passenger trains. Indian Railways has fixed normal second class fare for ‘passenger trains’ from February 27.

These are now called ‘Express Special’ or ‘MEMU/DEMU Express’ trains. Inauguration of 2,000 mega projects of the Railway Department today Railway authorities have reduced the general class fare by around 50 percent for all Main Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU) trains and trains starting from ‘Zero’.

The fare structure in the Unreserved Ticket System (UTS) application has also been changed accordingly. This fare reduction is applicable to all trains which were earlier classified as passenger trains. Passenger trains were temporarily suspended during the COVID-19 pandemic.

They were restarted and the minimum ticket price was increased from Rs 10 to Rs 30. It was in line with the fare of express trains. However, with a recent announcement, the railway authorities have withdrawn this decision. It has brought comfort to the passengers. Ticket prices for many places have been reduced to half of the previous prices.

It has provided the necessary relief to the passengers. Central Railway Passenger Advisory Committee member Shivnath Bijani said that the changed fares have come into effect from Thursday itself. The representatives and passenger organizations have been continuously demanding a reduction in ticket prices. The recent reduction in the fare has been appreciated by the passengers. Passengers are happy about the new prices.
