More than 42 lakh cases were settled across Karnataka during the National Lok Adalat held on September 19, bringing relief to thousands of people involved in different types of legal disputes.
A total of 44,28,455 cases were taken up across the High Court, district courts and taluk courts. Of these, 42,43,624 cases were resolved, leaving 1,84,831 cases pending after the proceedings.
The settlement process also resulted in compensation amounting to Rs 2,384 crore being provided in cases where financial relief was applicable.
The figures were shared during a press conference by Karnataka High Court judges Justice Anu C Shivaram and Justice R Devadas. The information covered cases handled by the High Court as well as courts at the district and taluk levels.
The High Court benches in Bengaluru, Dharwad and Kalaburagi together disposed of 10 cases during the National Lok Adalat. A much larger number of matters were handled by district and taluk courts across Karnataka.
Marriage related disputes formed one of the categories addressed during the proceedings. A total of 1,230 divorce cases were settled. Among them, 287 couples resolved their disputes through reconciliation and decided to continue their marriages.
The settlement process also covered civil and property disputes. As many as 2,828 cases involving property related disagreements were resolved, providing an alternative to prolonged litigation for the parties involved.
Cases connected with vehicles and financial disputes also accounted for a significant portion of the proceedings. The National Lok Adalat settled 4,160 motor vehicle offence cases and 584 motor accident claim cases.
Cheque bounce disputes were another major category. A total of 10,093 cheque bounce cases were settled during the proceedings, helping the parties involved reach agreements without continuing lengthy court proceedings.
Several other categories were also included. The courts settled 571 land acquisition cases, nine cases related to the Real Estate Regulatory Authority and 130 consumer disputes.
Another 2,930 cases falling under other categories were also resolved during the National Lok Adalat.
Lok Adalats provide an alternative mechanism for resolving disputes through settlement and compromise. Instead of continuing with lengthy court proceedings, parties can reach an agreement with the assistance of the legal system.
The large number of settlements recorded during the latest exercise reflects the wide range of disputes that can be taken up through the process. Matters involving families, property, financial transactions, vehicles and consumer issues can all reach settlement when the parties are willing to resolve their differences.
For people involved in court cases, settlement can also reduce the time and expense associated with prolonged litigation. However, the possibility of settlement depends on the nature of the dispute and the willingness of the parties concerned to reach an agreement.
The September 19 proceedings were part of the scheduled National Lok Adalat programme. With more cases expected to be taken up in the coming months, the next major opportunity for settlement will be important for litigants who are looking for an alternative to continuing their disputes through regular court proceedings.
The final National Lok Adalat of the year is scheduled for December 12. People with eligible disputes can approach the appropriate legal services authorities or courts to understand whether their matters can be considered for settlement.
The Karnataka figures also show the scale at which Lok Adalats can operate when courts, legal services authorities and litigants come together for settlement proceedings.
For the thousands of people whose cases were resolved on September 19, the process has brought an end to disputes that may otherwise have continued through the judicial system. The remaining cases will continue through the appropriate legal process unless they are settled at a later stage.
