Mangalore University Approves Closure of 22 Private Colleges Due to Declining Student Enrollment

Mangalore: In response to the decline in student enrollment, the Academic Council of Mangalore University has approved the closure of 22 private colleges in the Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts.

These colleges will shut down starting from the next academic year due to a lack of sufficient student admissions. However, students who have been admitted this year will still be allowed to complete their courses.

Colleges to be closed:

1. Aba Women’s First Grade College, Surathkal
2. Anjuman First Grade College, Mangalore
3. Amrit College, Padil
4. Silicon College of Advanced Studies, Konchadi
5. Mogling Institute of German Language, Balmat
6. Saras Arts and Science College, Mangalore
7. Rosary College of Management Studies, Bolara
8. Karavali College of Education
9. Premakanti College of Education
10. Sapiencesi Bethany First Grade College, Nelyadi
11. Sharada Women’s College, Sulya
12. Ramakunjeshwar College
13. Hazrat Sayyed Madani Women’s College, Ullal
14. St. Sebastian College of Commerce
15. St. Thomas College, Beltangady
16. Mar Ivanios College, Kadaba
17. Madhav Pai College, Manipal
18. Mookambika First Grade College, Byndoor
19. Varasiddhi Vinayak First Grade College, Kundapura
20. B.D. Shetty College of Business Management, Irodi, Udupi
21. Vidyaniketan First Grade College, Kapu
22. Krishna Bhai Vasudev Shenai Smarak College, Katpadi

In addition, recent reports have highlighted a severe shortage of teaching and non-teaching staff in state universities. Most of the institutions are heavily dependent on guest lecturers, leading to a situation where both older universities and newly established ones are struggling with faculty shortages and lack of adequate government funding.

As a result, new universities are compelled to increase fees significantly, further leading to a drop in student admissions.
