The Koppal Gavi Mutt has rejected social media claims that Abhinava Gavisiddheshwara Swamiji refused the invitation to inaugurate the 2026 Mysuru Dasara. The Mutt has urged devotees and the public not to believe unverified posts circulating online.
The controversy began after a social media post appeared carrying the image and name of the Koppal seer. The post claimed that the Swamiji had turned down the invitation and had allegedly placed conditions related to industrial pollution in Koppal district before agreeing to attend the Dasara inauguration.
The Mutt has said that the circulating post does not represent the Swamiji or the institution. It has also advised people to rely on official communication from the Gavi Mutt when important decisions involving the seer are announced.
The claim is particularly significant because Chief Minister D K Shivakumar had officially announced Abhinava Gavisiddheshwara Swamiji as the person selected to inaugurate this year’s Mysuru Dasara. Reports published after the announcement said the Swamiji had accepted the government’s invitation.
The 2026 Mysuru Dasara festivities are scheduled to begin on October 11 and continue until October 21, when the Vijayadashami procession will be held. The selection of the Koppal seer has attracted considerable attention because a religious leader from North Karnataka will be opening the state’s major cultural festival.
The viral post reportedly claimed that the Chief Minister had spent considerable time trying to persuade the Swamiji to accept the invitation. It further suggested that the seer would attend only if action was taken against polluting industries in Koppal district.
The Gavi Mutt has rejected that version of events. According to the clarification reported from the Mutt, there has been no decision by the Swamiji to refuse the Dasara invitation and the claims being circulated through unidentified social media accounts should not be treated as official information.
The development has also drawn attention because environmental groups recently addressed an open appeal to the Swamiji regarding industrial pollution in Koppal. The groups requested that he raise concerns about environmental issues with the state government. This separate development may have contributed to speculation online, but it does not establish that the Swamiji rejected the Dasara invitation.
The government has also maintained that the Swamiji is set to inaugurate the festival. Karnataka Minister for Kannada and Culture Shivraj Tangadagi has reportedly rejected the social media claims and warned that action could be taken against people spreading false information.
The government’s communication is significant because the selection was formally announced by the Chief Minister in the Legislative Assembly. The announcement followed a direct conversation between the Chief Minister and the Swamiji, according to reports.
The choice of Abhinava Gavisiddheshwara Swamiji has also been notable because several other names had been discussed before the final decision. Among the names mentioned in connection with the Dasara inauguration were former cricketers Anil Kumble and Rahul Dravid, Supreme Court judge Justice B V Nagarathna and Karnataka High Court judge M Nagaprasanna.
The Gavi Mutt has meanwhile appealed to devotees to avoid forwarding unverified messages. The institution has said that important announcements concerning the Mutt and its seer will be communicated through its authorised channels.
The incident highlights how quickly an unverified social media message can create confusion around a major public event. A post carrying a familiar name or photograph may appear convincing, but that alone does not establish its authenticity.
For the moment, the official position remains that Abhinava Gavisiddheshwara Swamiji is scheduled to inaugurate Mysuru Dasara 2026. The festival will begin on October 11, while the grand Vijayadashami procession is scheduled for October 21.
