Maharashtra Omicron scare in school, 18 students test positive, one return from Qatar

Omicron scare starts in Maharashtra after 18 students test covid positive in school. Father of one of the students studying in the school had returned to India from Qatar a few days ago. Students at a school in Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra, tested positive for Covid-19.

All of them study in classes from 8th to 11th. Following this, authorities are conducting mass testing at the school on Saturday, where over 600 students will be tested for the novel coronavirus. The health department of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation said the father of one of the students studying in the school had returned to India from Qatar a few days ago.

As a precaution, the person and his family were tested for Covid-19. While the test report of the person with the travel history abroad came negative, his son’s report came positive. After this, the Covid test of all the students who had come in contact with the infected student was done.

A total of 16 students tested Covid-19 positive in the process. Maharashtra currently has 10,582 active cases of Covid-19, while according to central and state officials, the state has reported 40 cases of the Omicron variant so far.

Omicron is spreading at a very fast pace in India and total Omicron cases tally reach over 100. The scale of infections in the UK and France could translate to 14 lakhs of cases a day in the country, the government’s Covid task force chief said today.

India now has 101 Omicron cases across 11 states and Union Territories. “If we look at the scale of spread in the UK and if there is a similar outbreak in India, then given our population, there will be 14 lakh cases every day.

France is reporting 65,000 cases. If an outbreak of a similar scale takes place in India, then given our population it will mean 13 lakh cases every day,” VK Paul said in a grim warning as cases rise. In the UK, which has reported the highest ever daily rise of 88,042 cases, 2.4% of the cases are Omicron infections.

Europe is passing through a serious phase despite 80 percent partial vaccinations and despite the fact that they also went through a Delta wave, Dr Paul said. He advised caution on unnecessary travel, crowds, and New Year festivities.
