Breaking: Karnataka High school reopening from Feb 14: CM Basavaraja Bommai

Hijab Row: All high schools will reopen in Karnataka from Monday (Feb 14). In the first phase, up to 10th grade schools will be started. CM Basavaraj Bommai, Chief Minister, said that a decision will be taken regarding the reopening of the college in the second phase.

Following the High Court order, the Chief Minister held a meeting with Home Minister Arav Gnanendra, Higher Education Minister Ashwaththa Narayana and Education Minister BC Nagesh and informed the media representatives after the meeting.

Today afternoon High Court said All school-colleges in the state should have a quick start. Religious marks cannot be used until the next order. The court said in an oral order that it was not for schools to wear saffron or hijab. High court postponed hearing on Monday, Religious marks cannot be used until the next order.

As the issue snowballed into a major controversy, the government declared three days holidays on Tuesday for educational institutions across the state, even as voices across the country came in for and against the hijab issue. Karnataka Government announced 3 days holiday for 8 to degree classes on Tuesday.

Protests erupted at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial College in Udupi Karnataka after a large group of students wearing saffron stoles and headgears raised slogans in the college campus as hijab clad Muslim girls were staging a protest demanding justice. In Mandya, visuals of a group of boys heckling a hijab-clad girl went viral, even as support came pouring in for her on social media.

Tension prevailed at some Karnataka educational institutions in Udupi, Shivamogga and Bagalkote, forcing the police and authorities to intervene. Stone petting incident was reported near a college in Bagalkote’s Rabkavi Banhatti and a few students even tried to barge into the campus, whom police dispersed using a mild force. Couple of students and a teacher are said to be injured in the incident.
