The hijab controversy first erupted in January last year when six students of a government pre-degree (PU) college in Udupi alleged that the institution’s management did not allow them to enter the premises wearing hijab.
Muslim girls staged a protest outside the institution after being denied entry. In retaliation, several Hindu students started attending classes in several educational institutions wearing saffron shawls.

On March 15 last year, the Karnataka High Court declared that wearing the hijab is not compulsory in Islam and upheld the February 5 executive order. The students appealed to the Supreme Court, which issued a split verdict on the issue. The case is now scheduled to be heard by an extended bench.
