College reopen in Karnataka, Education Minister BC Nagesh Big Announcement

Hijab: The Karnataka High Court is scheduled to hear the case on Monday. Karnataka Education Minister BC Nagesh said on Sunday that Colleges will open from this week, The row on hijab that initially began as a protest by six students has rapidly snowballed into a major crisis in Karnataka, threatening the law and order situation. The international community too has raised concerns on the issue which has been discussed in the Parliament as well. B C Nagesh, who was recently named Karnataka’s minister for education, is in the thick of things surrounding the hijab row. He has been strongly propagating the idea of uniform minus hijab.

In the first phase, up to 10th grade schools will be started. As the issue snowballed into a major controversy, the government declared three days holidays on last Tuesday for educational institutions across the state, even as voices across the country came in for and against the hijab issue. Karnataka Government announced 3 days holiday for 8 to degree classes. In the wake of the hijab controversy, Karnataka Govt announced holiday for colleges till Feb 16. The Higher Education Department, All Colleges and Technical Education Departments have given leave continue till February 16, Minister of Higher Education Dr. C.N. Ashwath Narayan said.

Tension prevailed at some Karnataka educational institutions in Udupi, Shivamogga and Bagalkote, forcing the police and authorities to intervene. Stone petting incident was reported near a college in Bagalkote’s Rabkavi Banhatti and a few students even tried to barge into the campus, whom police dispersed using a mild force. Three colleges in Karnataka had stopped the entry of hijab-clad female students into the college premises over the last few days, which had led to a major flashpoint between students belonging to different communities. To protest the resistance by the Muslim girls. girls, Hindu students were seen sporting saffron shawls. The issue has snowballed into a political discussion nationwide . Ahead of the court hearing, the Udupi district administration imposed prohibitory orders under Section 144 of CrPC in areas near high schools in the district from Monday till February 19.
