Shivamogga : A 16-year-old SSLC student was allegedly beaten to death after he intervened in a quarrel between fellow students in Shivamogga on Monday, triggering shock and outrage in the locality.

The deceased has been identified as Sanketh (16), a student of a government high school in the Soolebailu area. According to preliminary information, the incident occurred when Sanketh was returning home after attending a special class on Monday evening.

Police said a group of students was engaged in a heated argument near the school premises. Sanketh reportedly stepped in to pacify the situation and separate the warring students. However, the situation escalated, and four students allegedly turned on him and assaulted him.

During the assault, Sanketh was reportedly punched forcefully in the chest. The blow caused him to lose consciousness and collapse on the spot. He was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital by locals and school authorities, but he succumbed to his injuries on the way, sources said.

A case has been registered at the Tunganagar Police Station, and an investigation is underway. Shivamogga Superintendent of Police Nikhil confirmed that two students have been taken into custody in connection with the incident, while efforts are on to identify and question others involved.

The tragic death of the teenager has left residents of Soolebailu in deep grief. Family members said Sanketh was academically bright and disciplined. “He was focused on his studies and had dreams of pursuing higher education,” a relative said, breaking down in tears.

Police are examining CCTV footage from nearby areas and recording statements of students and teachers to ascertain the exact sequence of events. Authorities have appealed to the public to maintain calm while the investigation progresses.

The incident has once again raised concerns over rising violence among minors and the need for stronger counselling and conflict-resolution mechanisms within schools.
