Karwar: A 40-year-old scooter rider was killed in a horrific road accident near Araga in Karwar taluk on Sunday evening after a speeding lorry rammed into his vehicle from behind. The victim has been identified as Ganapati Gowda (40), a resident of Binaga.
According to police, Ganapati Gowda was travelling from Binaga to the weekly Sunday market in Karwar via National Highway 66 when the accident occurred.
A lorry travelling at high speed from Karwar towards Ankola reportedly crashed into his scooter from behind. The impact was so severe that the scooter caught fire instantly and was completely engulfed in flames within moments.
The rider was thrown onto the road and was run over by the lorry. He became trapped beneath its wheels and suffered fatal injuries, dying on the spot.
Following the accident, the lorry driver fled the scene along with the vehicle. After receiving information about the incident, personnel from the Karwar Rural Police Station rushed to the spot, conducted an inspection, and initiated an investigation.
A case has been registered at the Karwar Rural Police Station, and police have launched a search operation to trace the absconding lorry driver and the vehicle involved in the accident.
