Coronavirus: India sweats as whereabouts of 495 Iranian tourists still missing

New Delhi: Amid the rising number of positive instances of Novel Coronavirus in India, the Central government on Friday increased its determination to discover 495 Iranian tourists who have been missing since a month ago. The authorities, however, have asked people not to panic as the missing tourists had entered India before the travel advisory was issued for Iran.

According to reports, the Ministry of Tourism and Ministry of External Affairs have launched an extensive search campaign for the missing Iranian tourists. The tracking is being done through hotel addresses, tour operators and agents. It should be noted that the government is not considering these tourists as coronavirus patients.

The tourists had arrived in India in February this year at a time when there had been no travel advisory issued for Iranian nationals and their whereabouts are unknown ever since.TN Reported

The situation in Iran is getting worse by the day as it has reported the third-highest number of deaths due to coronavirus in the world. A total number of 124 people have died due to coronavirus in Iran. China, the epicenter of the deadly outbreak, has confirmed 3,042 deaths so far while Italy stands at the second place with 148 deaths.

Earlier on Thursday, the External Affairs Ministry had said that they have not received any information from the Iran Embassy about 495 tourists who are said to be in India but are not traceable.

External Affairs Ministry Raveesh Kumar had emphasised that there is no need for panic because the tourists had arrived in India before the outbreak of coronavirus in their home country. “As per protocol when a foreign national goes missing, the embassy concerned is the first to know and then notify us. We have so far not received any information from the Iranian embassy,” he added.

Meanwhile in India, 31 people have been tested positive for Novel Coronavirus with the latest case coming from Delhi’s Uttam Nagar. The patient has a travel history to Malaysia and Thailand and has been moved to a quarantine facility. Amid the coronavirus scare in the national capital, the Delhi government has shut primary schools till March 31.
