Shakti Scheme New Update: free travel for women in private buses

Shakti Scheme Extension: The state government has implemented Shakti Scheme. Through this scheme, women can travel free of cost in four state government buses of the Karnataka Transport Corporation of the Karnataka Transport Department. Now the High Court has instructed the government to allow free travel in private buses.

The Shakti Scheme is being implemented even as the Congress government comes to power. Following this, a petition was filed in the High Court seeking a direction to the government to extend the Shakti scheme to private buses as well. After the hearing of this application, the High Court has issued an important order.

High Court Justice heard the dispute petition filed by Sharath Shetty, a private bus owner of Karkala in Udupi district. Krishnakumar’s bench directed the government. Also, the High Court directed the government to implement the Shakti Yojana for private buses as per the law within the next two months.

The Shakti Scheme is being implemented even as the Congress government comes to power. Private bus owners are in trouble after the implementation of Shakti Yojana. Therefore, a petition was filed in the High Court that this scheme should be extended to private buses as well. Senior Advocate Puttige Ramesh argued on behalf of the petitioner. Shakti Scheme launched in Karnataka on June 11, 2023.

All women residents of Karnataka can also avail the benefit of Shakti Scheme. The government has issued instructions to get free travel by getting Shakti smart card. As the Shakti Smart Card has not been implemented yet, it has provided an opportunity for free travel by showing government documents including Aadhaar Card, Voter ID.

BMTC, KSRTC, North West Karnataka Road Transport Corporation, North East Karnataka Road Transport Corporation general government buses are allowed to travel only for free. But women are not allowed to travel in luxury and air-conditioned buses including Rajhamsa, Airavata, Ambari, Flybus. The number of passengers traveling in government buses has also increased after the government’s Shakti Yojana. Leaving private buses, men and women are traveling in government buses.
