Karnataka 3 Lakh BPL card cancelled: Check your ration card is valid or not

Amid mounting financial pressure from the state's five guarantee schemes, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Monday directed officials to cancel all ineligible cards for those below the poverty line.

The Below Poverty line (BPL) ration card has been cancelled silently in Karnataka. The BPL card of approximately three lakh people in the state has been cancelled. If you go to collect ration, you will not be surprised if you get information that your card has been cancelled

Amid mounting financial pressure from the state’s five guarantee schemes, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Monday directed officials to cancel all ineligible cards for those below the poverty line. The state government has given a big shock to BPL card holders. The food department has given a punch to those who wanted to get government facilities by having a car, a site, a house and silently cut off their BPL card.

The BPL card of approximately three lakh people in the state has been cancelled. If you go to collect ration, you get information that your card has been cancelled. It is not surprising that the situation is similar to BPL card holders. In a meeting with District Collectors and District CEOs, Siddaramaiah highlighted that 80% of the state’s population has BPL cards, as opposed to 40% in Tamil Nadu.

He also urged officials to align the number of BPL cards with NITI Aayog’s recommendations, pointing out the low percentage of BPL families in Karnataka. The importance of BPL cards is underscored by their role in accessing the benefits of the government’s five guarantee schemes.

A June 2023 note from the Finance Department to the Food and Civil Supplies Department highlighted the widespread problem of ineligible persons holding BPL cards. According to the Finance Department, Karnataka has 1.13 crore BPL cards covering 85.23% of households. In comparison, BPL card holders are 62.11% in Gujarat, 64.36% in Maharashtra and 65.59% in Telangana.

Siddaramaiah reviewed the progress of Indira canteens. The government has given permission for the construction of 70 new Indira canteens in Bengaluru and similar projects are expected to start soon in other parts of the state. Additionally, delay in collection of property tax was discussed in the meeting. 224 crore in property tax arrears in the last financial year.

The government has collected Rs 806 crore till June this year and another Rs 1,053 crore is due. The Chief Minister’s Office has directed all District Collectors to intensify efforts to collect these dues through a concentrated campaign.

See how ineligibles are being detected, Government employees through HRMS employee software, Income tax payer information through IT department information, Car, tractor, lorry owner details through RTO. The details of those who own more than 3 hectares of land have been collected through the revenue department’s land software.

Now the registration office software of the revenue department gets the information of those who have an income of 1.20 lakh every year, and the food department has cut off the benefits of the ineligible.
