Former Royal Challengers Bengaluru wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik has been appointed as the IPL franchise's new batting coach and mentor, announced on Monday (July 1).

The 39-year-old recently retired from all forms of the game after the conclusion of IPL 2024. Dinesh Karthik was part of the Indian team that won the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007 and has played in every edition of the IPL till his retirement. He has had two different stints as a player with RCB, with the latest one from 2022-24 proving to be the most productive.

His brilliant run as a finisher in the 2022 season saw him selected in the Indian squad for the T20 World Cup in Australia. Even though he had a lackluster season in 2023, Karthik scored over 300 runs at a strike rate of 187.36 earlier this year. In a recent interview with Cricbuzz, Karthik wanted to return to the game by becoming a coach. “I’m thinking of mixing coaching and broadcasting for the foreseeable future.

It is not as simple as it looks. But I must admit, some of the players who played for RCB are keen to come and work with me in Chennai. So, it is positive. It’s very exciting,” he told Cricbuzz. Reacting to the news of his appointment, Karthik said: “”Coaching at a professional level has been incredibly exciting for me and I’m really excited about this new chapter in my life.

Hopefully, my breadth of experiences as a player will contribute to the development of the group and bring added value. “I believe that success in cricket depends not only on technical proficiency but also on match intelligence and composure.
