IPL 2024: RCB former director Mike Hesson finally breaks silence on Yuzvendra Chahal

IPL 2024: Former Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) team director Mike Hesson described Yuzvendra Chahal Chahal as one of RCB's top 5 players of all time. Before the mega auction for the 2022 season, teams were allowed four retentions.

IPL 2024: Former Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) team director Mike Hesson has revealed the reason why leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal was dropped from the team. They said that they had planned to buy Chahal in the mega auction of 2022, but the calculations were messed up in the auction.

Hesson described Yuzvendra Chahal as one of RCB’s top 5 players of all time. Before the mega auction for the 2022 season, teams were allowed four retentions. But RCB chose to retain only three players. Only Virat Kohli (15 crores), Glenn Maxwell (11 crores) and Mohammad Siraj (7 crores) were retained in the team.

It was speculated that RCB might try to recall Chahal in the auction. But when Chahal’s name came up in the auction, RCB did not make a single bid. Finally Rajasthan Royals bought Chahal for Rs 6.50 crore.

We kept only three players as we wanted to buy back both Harshal Patel and Yuzvendra Chahal in the auction. As we retained only three players, we were left with an extra four crores,” said Hesson while speaking at the private program.

Perhaps the thing that still frustrates me is that despite being one of the best players in the IPL, he didn’t feature in the top two marquee lists. That was ridiculous. He was number 65 in the auction list, which was difficult for us,” he said.

“We spent a lot of time in mock auctions. Harshal Patel was in the first three sets but Yuzvendra Chahal was down. If we saved all our money and waited for the sixth set, we knew there were five other teams with more money than us. Before that we dropped all the bowlers. Had we failed to get Yuzvendra Chahal, we would have been left without a leg-spinner,” said Hesson. RCB bought Sri Lanka all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga in the 2022 mega auction.
