Cyclone Michoung: High alert announced in this state, train service canceled

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has estimated that Cyclone Michoung is expected to intensify in the next 24 hours with coastal districts of North Tamil Nadu and South Andhra Pradesh lashing with heavy rains and a high pressure in the Southwest Bay of Bengal.

Tamil Nadu have been put on high alert as Cyclone Michoung is expected to hit the coastal districts. 118 trains have been cancelled. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has sent 18 teams to Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and Puducherry.

10 additional teams have been mobilized to deal with any unforeseen situation. The cyclone formation is approximately 440 km east-southeast of Puducherry and 420 km south-east of Chennai. A severe depression is likely to move towards the ‘west-northwest’ direction and a cyclonic storm may develop over southwest Bay of Bengal during the next 24 hours.

After this, it will move north-west and reach the west-central Bay of Bengal off the coast of south Andhra Pradesh and adjoining north Tamil Nadu by Monday morning,” the IMD forecast said. On December 5, the cyclone is expected to reach a maximum speed of 80-90 kmph as it crosses the southern Andhra Pradesh coast between Nellore and Machalipatnam, possibly reaching speeds of up to 100 kmph.

Damage to property and vulnerable buildings is expected in coastal districts of southern Andhra Pradesh and adjoining coastal districts of northern Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, the IMD said. Heavy rain is expected on Sunday in some places of North Coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.

Rain is also likely on Monday, which may taper off later. Chennai is also likely to receive heavy rains in the coming days, IMD said. South coastal Andhra Pradesh will receive light to moderate rain at most places on Sunday. Heavy rain will occur at isolated places over coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam on Monday and Tuesday.

Heavy rain is likely to occur in the state on December 6 as well. Rayalaseema region may experience rain on Sunday and Monday. Odisha is likely to witness heavy rainfall over the south coast and adjoining south interior between Monday and Wednesday.
