How did the study work:

The injection was tested on 303 healthy married men over the past seven years. Based on the results, ICMR said that the experiment was successful. This study revealed that the non-hormonal injectable male contraceptive RISUG (Reversible Inhibition of Sperm under Guidance) is completely safe and effective.

Sperm cells travel from the testes to the penis through the vas deferens. It works for a long time. The findings of the phase III study were published in the international open access journal Andrology. 25-40 year olds were selected for family planning and given 60 mg reversible injection. Notably, ICMR said through its trial that 99 percent of pregnancies can be prevented with RISUG without any serious side effects.

In contraceptive development, RISUG presents greater efficacy compared to all other contraceptives as both males and females are at the threshold of entry into the contraceptive program. The health of the wives of the married men subjected to the experiment was also monitored and it was found that there was no ill effect.

This contraceptive works for 13 years. No pharma company wants to sell a product like this that will remain effective for a long time. In such a situation, the process of bringing it to market can be challenging. Sperm cells travel from the testes to the penis through the vas deferens. RISUG was founded by Dr. IIT Kharagpur. Developed by Sujoy Kumar Guha.

According to the study, with the ever-increasing world population, there is an urgent need to develop modern methods of male contraception for population control. Although sterilization is quite effective as a contraceptive method, some important limitations of this method call for the development of improved techniques.
