Karnataka heavy rainfall issued red alert: announced holiday for schools, college

Coastal Karnataka and southern hinterland are expected to receive "isolated heavy rains" on July 6 and July 7, the India Meteorological Department said. IMD has announced red alert for Dakshina Kannada district.

IMD has announced red alert for Dakshina Kannada district. Kannada District Deputy Commissioner Mullai Muhilan has ordered the closure of anganwadis, schools and pre-degree colleges.

“All Anganwadis, Schools and Pre-Graduate Colleges on July 6 in response to the Red Alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) for heavy rains in the district,” The district administration has instructed fishermen to stay away from fishing activities today. Citizens have been ordered not to visit low-lying areas as a precaution for red alert.

The district administration has taken precautionary measures to ensure public safety, advising citizens and tourists to avoid low-lying areas, river banks and seashores. The order of the district administration said that the fishermen have been instructed not to go into the sea for fishing.

Coastal and Western Ghats regions have already received significant rainfall in early July. On July 3 alone, Agumbe received 34 mm of rain, said CS Patil, director of India Meteorological Centre, Bangalore.

Beltangadi, Sulya, Puttur, Kadaba, Moodabidire, Bantwala and Mangalore taluks of Dakshina Kannada district have been experiencing heavy rains for the last three to four days. Due to the announcement of Red Alert today, there is a possibility that there will be more rain today as well.
