After experiencing a prolonged dry spell over the past several days, Karnataka is set to witness a fresh spell of widespread rainfall from today, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a Yellow Alert for more than 13 districts across the state.
According to the IMD, heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds is likely to affect several parts of Coastal Karnataka, Malnad, Bengaluru, and interior districts over the next few days. Wind speeds of up to 50 kmph are expected in some areas.
The districts placed under Yellow Alert include Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural, Vijayapura, Koppal, Bidar, Chikkamagaluru, Chikkaballapur, Tumakuru, Shivamogga, Kolar, and other adjoining regions.
Among the coastal districts, Udupi and Dakshina Kannada are expected to receive heavy rainfall, while Uttara Kannada is likely to experience moderate showers, according to the weather department.
Karnataka has witnessed a significant monsoon rainfall deficit since the beginning of the season, leading to a sharp decline in water levels across several major reservoirs. Although Bengaluru received rainfall a couple of days ago, the state continues to face concerns over inadequate rainfall.
The latest forecast has raised hopes of improving the water situation, particularly in the Malnad districts of Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, Hassan, and Kodagu, where heavy rainfall could substantially increase inflows into reservoirs and help replenish water storage levels.
