However, Diwali holidays differ significantly in duration and date between northern and southern regions, often due to local rituals, customs and traditions. Starting this week, schools across several states will be closed for Diwali and the subsequent holiday of Chhat.

Several state governments have fixed dates for holidays in celebration of Diwali, which falls on November 12. Parents and students are advised to check with the administration of their individual schools and colleges to clarify the exact number of holidays declared by their individual institutions.

Many states, including Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu and Bihar, have declared a three- to four-day holiday to celebrate the festival of lights. Now let’s look at the list of states that have declared holidays for Diwali:

Diwali Holidays 2023 Tamil Nadu:

On November 13, in observance of Diwali, all schools, colleges and other educational institutions in Tamil Nadu will be closed. As this year Diwali falls on a Sunday, this decision has been taken keeping in mind the convenience of government employees and students. In response to the declared holiday, the Tamil Nadu government has declared November 18 as a working day.

Diwali Holidays 2023 Bihar:

During the two holidays of Chhath and Diwali, government schools in Bihar will remain closed from November 11 to November 21 as per an order directing District Planning Officers (DPOs) and District Education Officers (DEOs) of Bihar to follow the holiday schedule approved by State Planning Director B Karthikeya Dhanaji.

Diwali Holidays 2023 Telangana and Andhra Pradesh:

Telangana and Andhra Pradesh governments have declared November 13 as a state holiday to be observed by educational institutions across the two states in honor of Diwali. This year, Diwali falls on a Sunday, so students can celebrate the festival of lights over three days, including the weekends of November 11 and 12.

Diwali Holidays 2023 Maharashtra:

The Education Department of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Zilla Parishad has planned a 19-day Diwali vacation from November 9 and November 27. The Dababasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University (BAMU) has declared a holiday for its institutions from November 6 to November 27, after which classes will resume. These colleges are spread across four districts.
