Girl Sells 12 Mangoes for Rs 1.2 Lakh, Buys Smartphone for Online Classes

Jamshedpur: Eleven-year-old Jamshedpur girl, Tulsi Kumari, could not believe it when an “uncle” from Mumbai told her he had bought a dozen mangoes from her for Rs 1,20,000, each mango for Rs 10,000. The “uncle” is Ameya Hete, managing director, Valuable Edutainment Pvt Ltd, which facilitates virtual classes.

He deposited Rs 1,20,000 to her father Srimal Kumar’s account on Wednesday. Hete had heard of Tulsi’s struggle to support the family. She sold mangoes at the roadside in Jamshedpur and told a vernacular channel that she wanted to save money from the sales to buy a smartphone so that she could study online. “Yes, I sold mangoes and wanted to save money to buy a phone so that I could resume my studies online.

Now I have bought a phone and will attend classes, ” said Tulsi over the phone. The 5th grader stopped attending a government school after the pandemic-induced lockdown forced the school to teach online. Hete said he was touched by the girl’s determination to face financial difficulties. “She didn’t blame her fate or asked for alms.

This is why I said we have bought her mangoes and not done any charity work. This is to not just to encourage her and acknowledge the dignity in work, but also to encourage others not to give up fighting,” said Hete.
