17 killed in massive explosion at explosives manufacturing unit in Nagpur, probe underway

Nagpur: At least 17 workers were killed and several others seriously injured in a massive explosion at an explosives manufacturing unit in Nagpur on Sunday morning, triggering panic in nearby areas and prompting a large-scale rescue operation.

The blast occurred at the SBL Energy facility located in Rawalgaon area of Katol taluk in the district, where detonators and explosive materials were being produced.

According to officials, the explosion took place between 7:00 am and 7:15 am in the detonator packing section of the factory. The intensity of the blast was so powerful that it shook nearby houses and created fear among residents.

Several workers present inside the unit at the time were trapped under debris, while others sustained severe burn injuries. Injured workers were immediately rushed to hospitals in Nagpur, including Orange City Hospital and nearby government medical facilities.

Medical teams confirmed that some of the injured remain in critical condition and are undergoing intensive treatment. Emergency response teams, including fire brigade personnel, rushed to the spot and began rescue operations.

Authorities cordoned off the area to prevent further casualties, while teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) were deployed to assist in rescue and recovery efforts.

Officials said the exact cause of the explosion is yet to be determined and a detailed investigation has been launched to ascertain whether safety protocols were followed at the facility.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy. In a statement, he said, “The explosion at the explosives factory in Nagpur district is extremely unfortunate and tragic. I am in constant touch with the district administration. Rescue operations are ongoing, and all necessary assistance is being provided to the victims and their families.”

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari also conveyed condolences, calling the incident “heart-wrenching.” He said, “I offer my heartfelt tributes to the deceased workers and pray for the speedy recovery of those injured. My thoughts are with the bereaved families.”

Teams from the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO) and other regulatory authorities have reached the site to examine compliance with safety norms. Officials said a comprehensive inquiry has been ordered, and strict action will be taken if negligence is found.
