Delhi reports highest-ever spike in Covid-19 cases, deaths in last 24 hours

New Delhi: Delhi has again broken its own record of highest-ever single-day tally with a jump of 24,375 new Covid-19 cases in last 24 hours. Apart from the unprecedented surge of 24,375 fresh cases on Saturday, Delhi has also registered 167 deaths in the last 24 hours.

The fresh jump in cases has taken Delhi active caseload to 69,799. As per the latest Covid-19 bulletin, Delhi on Saturday had a case positivity rate of 24.56 per cent. In other words, every fourth person in the city whose sample was taken, has tested positive for the viral disease.

Case positive rate refers to the percentage of samples that test positive for a disease out of the total samples tested. On Friday, Delhi reported a record surge of over 19,000 fresh cases of coronavirus in a span of 24 hours.

Weekend curfew in Delhi: The Delhi government earlier this week decided to enforce a weekend curfew in light of the recent surge in Covid-19 cases. The decision was taken following a meeting between Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Lieutenant-Governor Anil Baijal on Thursday.

Addressing a press conference on Thursday, the chief minister said the weekend curfew will come into effect from April 17. The weekend curfew started at 10 pm on Friday evening and will be in force till 6 am Monday.
