Ashwin, Axar Patel fire, India win by 10-wicket over England inside 2 days in Ahmedabad

Team India completed a famous victory in Ahmedabad on Thursday as they beat England by 10 wickets in the Pink-ball Test inside 2 days to take a 2-1 lead in the four-match series. India chased down the paltry target of 49 runs in 7.4 overs to knock England out of the race to qualify for the ICC World Test Championship final.

Rohit Sharma remained unbeaten on 25, finishing the match with a six, while Shubman Gill scored 15 not out in the chase. India began the day at 99 for 3 in their first innings but a dramatic collapse triggered by spinners Jack Leach and Joe Root saw the hosts lose their remaining 7 wickets for 46 runs, which meant England had to begin their second innings with a 33-run deficit.

Root picked up his maiden five-wicket haul while Leach grabbed 4 to bring England right back in the game after their 112-all out in the first innings on Day 1. Root’s figures of 5 for 8 were the best by a spinner in Test history. But Indian spinner Axar Patel and Ravichandran Ashwin didn’t let the pressure off England as they shared 9 wickets between themselves to bowl the visitors out for 81 in the second session.

England lasted 30.4 overs with all 10 batsmen falling to spin. Axar finished with 11 wickets in the match, recording the best bowling figures in a Day-night Test. His 11 for 70 bettered the previous best of 10 for 62 by Pat Cummins which he managed against Sri Lanka in Brisbane in 2019-20. Axar also became the first bowler to take successive five-fors in a day-night Test while Ashwin completed 400 wickets in Test cricket during his spell and also went past 600 wickets across formats in international cricket, in the process.
